I am obsessed with the Netflix show STRANGER THINGS right now. It's so insanely good. If you haven't seen it, think Freaks and Geeks meets X-files. The one thing I love about it the most is the spot on dialog and writing for kids on the show. It's everything I love about middle grade. Funny yet serious, spooky yet engrossing, and is an INCREDIBLE show about friendship and relationships. Anyways, I thought it would be great to start a booklist for fans of STRANGER THINGS looking for that next MG read. You can check out the hashtag on Twitter for other recs but here are a few to get you started:
1.THE JUMBIES by Tracey Baptsite
A young girl has to defend her home island from evil spirits known as Jumbies. A spooky retelling of a Haitian folktale, "The Magic Orange Tree," that is perfect for someone looking for a strange and spooky read.
2. FEARSOME CREATURES OF THE LUMBERWOODS by Hal Johnson
Based on lumberjack myths from around the USA, this creepy middle grade features 20 stories that feel like they could belong in Upside-Down.
3. THE TIME FETCH by Amy Herrick
Four kids must work together in a strange and thrilling adventure where the boundaries between worlds and dimensions are blurred, and places and creatures on the other side are much like the ones they’ve always known—but slightly twisted, a little darker, and much more dangerous.
That is just a short list to get you started. If you want some more Stranger Things middle grade, check out the #StrangerThingsMG hashtag on Twitter.
